“This is how you shall eat it: your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand. Exodus 12, 11
“Jesus said to them, ‘Take nothing for the journey, neither walking stick, nor sack, nor food, nor money, and let no one take a second tunic.’ ” Luke 9, 3
From Joseph to Moses to Jesus, the call is to travel light. Well, yes, but…..
When I remember our times of packing before a trip, traveling light is not what we do. We take everyday clothes and dress up clothes and several pair of shoes, books, etc. etc. And if we’re traveling by car, we take our pillows. Well, at least they’re light.
How far could I get, I wonder, with only the clothes on my back and no money? Probably not far.
But the real question is how far can I get on this road to Bethlehem unencumbered?
Disappointments and resentments are cumbersome. And they shape our lives in more ways that we recognize or care to admit. The heaviest is usually a disappointment in our self.
Holy One, help me release old fears of not enough and the disappointment those fears hold. Help me remember this road is open and the burdens are light.
